Senna alexandrina, commonly known as common senna or Alexandrian senna, is a small, drought-tolerant shrub in the family Fabaceae. It is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of North and East Africa, particularly along the Nile, and is also found in the Arabian Peninsula and parts of India. The genus name Senna is derived from the Arabic sana, which has historically referred to the plant's use in medicine since antiquity. The species epithet alexandrina refers to the ancient Egyptian port city of Alexandria, which once served as a primary trade hub for exporting the dried leaves and pods to Europe. Historically, senna has been one of the most widely documented medicinal plants in human history, featuring prominently in 9th-century Arabian medical texts and later in European pharmacopoeias as a potent purgative and laxative.
The plant is an evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height of about 0.5 to 1.5 meters. It possesses feathery, alternate, bipinnate leaves composed of several pairs of lanceolate leaflets. It produces racemes of bright, five-petaled yellow flowers, which are followed by the development of characteristic, papery, flattened green pods that curve slightly at maturity, containing several seeds. Senna alexandrina is highly adapted to harsh, sunny environments with well-drained, sandy soils. Due to its significant pharmacological demand, it is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in India, for the harvesting of its leaves and pods, which are carefully dried to preserve their active chemical constituents.
Senna alexandrina is exclusively used for its pharmacological effects rather than culinary flavor. The leaves and pods are typically processed into dried herbal preparations, powdered extracts, or concentrated tinctures. Its most famous application is as a fast-acting stimulant laxative; it is the primary ingredient in many over-the-counter and traditional digestive aids used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. Due to its potency, it is rarely consumed as a primary food, though it is sometimes blended into mild herbal tea formulations where it must be balanced carefully with carminative herbs (like peppermint or ginger) to prevent gastrointestinal cramping.
Nutritionally, senna is not considered a traditional food source and provides negligible caloric or vitamin content. Its clinical value is entirely derived from its secondary metabolites, specifically sennosides (A and B). These are complex hydroxyanthracene glycosides that remain inactive until they reach the large intestine. Once there, they are metabolized by the resident gut microbiota into rhein anthrone, a compound that stimulates the intestinal mucosa, increases fluid secretion, and triggers peristaltic contractions in the colon. Because of this mechanism, prolonged use is strongly discouraged, as it can lead to electrolyte imbalances or "lazy bowel" syndrome. Modern pharmacological research continues to study the safety of these compounds and their interactions with other medications.
