Prunus amygdalus, commonly known as the almond, is a deciduous tree in the family Rosaceae. While biologically a tree nut, the almond is botanically classified as a drupe—a fleshy fruit with a stone—closely related to peaches, cherries, and plums. The fruit consists of a leathery, grey-green outer hull (the exocarp and mesocarp) that splits open as it matures, revealing a hard, woody shell (the endocarp) that protects the single, teardrop-shaped seed—the almond kernel—inside.
