The maternal parent, 'Ark. 519', provided robust plant vigor and a strong genetic link to high-yielding, erect southern cultivars like 'Brazos'. The paternal parent, 'Ark. 593'—itself a historical cross between 'Brazos' and the wild, unique 'Hillquist' blackberry—was highly valued by breeders for its exceptionally early ripening traits. Because 'Ark. 593' carried hidden, unexpressed genes for primocane-fruiting inherited from 'Hillquist', its combination with 'Ark. 519' to create 'Ark. 830' established a crucial genetic bridge for mapping the inheritance models of annual-fruiting behaviors in modern tetraploid blackberries, although 'Ark. 830' itself did not exhibit the primocane-fruiting trait.
The 'Ark. 830' fruit exhibits a mid-season harvest profile with medium-to-large, glossy black drupelets that form tightly packed, firm berry structures. Agronomically, the plant is noted for its low-to-moderate chilling requirement—typically needing between 100 and 200 hours below 7°C to break dormancy—making it highly adaptable to warmer, subtropical growing environments where traditional biennial blackberries fail to thrive.
