Echinometra lucunter is a species of sea urchin in the family Echinometridae, commonly known as the Atlantic rock-boring sea urchin. It is a tropical marine echinoderm widely distributed throughout the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda, and the eastern coasts of Central and South America, where it inhabits shallow rocky reefs and coral substrates. The genus name Echinometra derives from the Greek echinos, meaning “hedgehog” or “sea urchin,” and metra, meaning “womb” or “matrix,” referring to the internal skeletal structure characteristic of the group. The etymology of the species epithet lucunter is unknown. The species is notable for its ability to bore into limestone and coral rock using both mechanical abrasion and chemical processes, creating protective cavities in reef structures.
As a food source, Echinometra lucunter is harvested in parts of the Caribbean and northeastern Brazil for its gonads, which are consumed fresh and are analogous to uni in other culinary traditions. Although generally smaller and often more intensely flavored than temperate commercial sea urchins, it is locally valued as a seasonal coastal food and is sometimes eaten raw or lightly cooked. Its use is associated particularly with Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian coastal foodways, where small-scale reef harvesting has historically supplemented fishing economies.
From a nutritional perspective, Echinometra lucunter contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), omega-3 fatty acids associated with anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects; echinochrome A, a naphthoquinone pigment with antioxidant activity; ovothiol, a sulfur-containing antioxidant thiol compound; and carotenoids such as β-carotene and astaxanthin. These compounds contribute to its antioxidant capacity and potential health benefits, although accumulation of environmental contaminants in reef ecosystems may influence its safety depending on harvesting location.
