Fragaria chiloensis, commonly known as the beach strawberry, coastal strawberry, or Chilean strawberry, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Rosaceae. It is native to the Pacific coastlines of North and South America, particularly thriving in the sandy dunes of Chile, Peru, and the western United States from Alaska to California. The genus name Fragaria comes from the Latin fraga (strawberry), while the species epithet chiloensis refers to Chiloé Island in Chile, where it was extensively cultivated by the indigenous Mapuche and Huilliche people long before European arrival. This species is historically monumental as the "mother" of the modern garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa), providing the large fruit size and robust structure that its hybrid offspring inherited.
The plant is exceptionally hardy, characterized by leathery, dark green, glossy leaves that are often covered in fine white hairs to protect against salt spray and moisture loss. It spreads via thick runners and produces large, five-petaled white flowers. The fruit is notably large for a wild species—sometimes reaching the size of a walnut—and ranges in color from a pale, creamy white to a soft, dusty red. In its native coastal habitats, it plays a vital ecological role in stabilizing sand dunes and providing a seasonal food source for coastal birds and mammals.
Fragaria chiloensis has been a central part of Andean gastronomy for centuries. Unlike the bright red garden strawberry, the traditional Chilean variety (often called frutilla blanca) is prized for its pale, almost white flesh and its unique flavor profile, which is distinctly aromatic with notes of pineapple and honey. In Chile, it remains a seasonal delicacy, often used in artisanal desserts, clery (a traditional fruit wine punch), and specialty jams. Because it is highly perishable and the plants are less productive than modern hybrids, the "white strawberry" is considered a rare, high-value heritage crop.
Nutritionally, the beach strawberry is rich in Vitamin C, dietary fiber, and a suite of specialized polyphenols. Its chemical composition is dominated by ellagitannins and anthocyanins, though the white-fleshed varieties have significantly lower concentrations of red pigments like pelargonidin compared to F. virginiana. The leaves and roots have been utilized in traditional Mapuche medicine as an infusion to treat intestinal ailments and as a gargle for throat infections. Modern research focuses on its genetic resistance to pests and salinity, as well as its high concentration of volatile esters that contribute to its "tropical" aroma.
