Swietenia macrophylla, widely known as big-leaf mahogany, is a large, deciduous tropical tree in the Meliaceae family. It is native to the neotropical regions of Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico through the Amazon Basin to Bolivia. The genus name Swietenia honors the Dutch-Austrian physician Gerard van Swieten, while the species epithet macrophylla is derived from the Greek makros ("large") and phyllon ("leaf"), referencing its expansive, pinnately compound foliage. Historically, this species is the most commercially significant of the three true mahoganies and has been the foundation of the global fine furniture industry for centuries, prized for its beautiful reddish-brown heartwood, exceptional workability, and stability.
The tree is a dominant emergent species in its native rainforest, frequently reaching heights of 30 to 50 meters with a broad, buttressed trunk. Its leaves are large, glossy, and alternate, consisting of several pairs of leaflets that create a dense canopy. The tree produces small, greenish-yellow, fragrant flowers in panicled clusters, which are pollinated by insects. Its fruit is a large, woody, erect capsule—often called a "sky fruit" because it hangs at the top of the canopy—that splits into five valves when mature, releasing numerous papery, winged seeds designed for long-distance wind dispersal. Swietenia macrophylla thrives in deep, fertile, moist soils and prefers areas with distinct seasonal rainfall, making it a critical component of neotropical forest ecology.
While primarily valued for its timber, Swietenia macrophylla also possesses significant ethnobotanical importance. The seeds, known in Southeast Asia and parts of South America as "sky fruit" or buah tunjuk langit, are widely used in traditional medicine systems as an herbal remedy. They are typically consumed by drying, grinding into a powder, or boiling into a bitter infusion. In traditional Indonesian and Malaysian folk practices, these seeds are utilized to manage blood sugar levels, improve blood circulation, and alleviate symptoms of inflammatory conditions. Because of its intense economic value, the tree is now protected under international trade agreements (CITES), and harvesting is strictly regulated to prevent the depletion of wild populations.
Nutritionally and biochemically, the seeds are dense in specialized triterpenoids, flavonoids, and saponins. The most significant compounds identified in the seeds are swietenine, swietenolide, and various limonoids, which contribute to the bitter taste and the therapeutic properties attributed to the plant. These bioactive constituents have been the subject of modern pharmacological research, which investigates their potential as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic agents. The wood itself is rich in condensed tannins and phenolic compounds, which contribute to its natural resistance to decay and insect attack, although these compounds are not for human consumption.
