Aronia melanocarpa is a deciduous shrub species in the family Rosaceae commonly known as black chokeberry. It is native to eastern North America, where it grows in forests, wetlands, and temperate woodland edges, and it has also been widely cultivated in Europe and parts of Asia for its nutrient-dense berries. The genus name Aronia is derived from an ancient Greek word used for certain berry-bearing shrubs, while the species epithet melanocarpa comes from Greek melas (“black”) and karpos (“fruit”), referring to the dark purple to nearly black berries produced by the plant.
The shrub typically grows between one and three meters in height and produces clusters of white to pale pink flowers in spring that later develop into small round berries. The fruits ripen in late summer to autumn and are notable for their deep coloration and astringent flavor caused by high concentrations of tannins and polyphenols. Although the raw berries are quite tart and astringent, they become more palatable when processed, and they are increasingly cultivated for use in juices, jams, syrups, wines, and dietary supplements.
Aronia melanocarpa berries are valued for their exceptionally high concentration of polyphenolic compounds compared with many other fruits. These include anthocyanins responsible for the fruit’s dark color, as well as proanthocyanidins, flavonols, and phenolic acids. The berries are commonly processed into juice concentrates, dried fruit products, or fermented beverages. In Eastern Europe and Russia, chokeberries have long been used in preserves, fruit wines, and herbal preparations, while in modern food industries they are used as functional ingredients due to their strong antioxidant capacity.
Nutritionally, the fruit provides dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and trace minerals such as manganese. The high polyphenol content has been associated in research studies with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardiometabolic effects, although many of these findings come from laboratory or animal studies rather than large human clinical trials. Major compounds present in Aronia melanocarpa include anthocyanins such as cyanidin-3-galactoside (idaein), cyanidin-3-arabinoside, and cyanidin-3-glucoside (chrysanthemin), along with chlorogenic acid and quercetin derivatives.
