Mytilus edulis is a marine bivalve mollusk commonly known as the blue mussel, belonging to the family Mytilidae. The genus name Mytilus derives from Latin mytilus, taken from the Greek mytílos (μύτιλος) for mussel or shellfish, while the species epithet edulis is Latin for “edible”. It is native to the temperate and cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, including the coasts of northern and western Europe and the eastern coast of North America, and has also been introduced to other regions through aquaculture and shipping.
Archaeological evidence shows that Mytilus edulis has been consumed by coastal human populations since prehistoric times, often forming large shell middens. Historically it was gathered wild from intertidal zones, while in the modern era it is extensively farmed using rope, pole, and raft culture due to its rapid growth, high protein yield, and minimal feed requirements. Today it is an important commercial seafood valued for its mild flavor, nutritional density, and sustainability. As a food source, Mytilus edulis is directly consumed as whole mussels and also processed into several ingredients, including fresh or frozen mussel meat, dried or smoked mussels, mussel broths and stocks used as culinary bases, and fermented or preserved mussel products in some coastal traditions. In European cuisines, particularly in the Low Countries, France, the British Isles, and parts of Scandinavia, blue mussels are central to dishes such as steamed mussels with aromatics, soups, and sauces, while in North America they are similarly used in chowders, pasta dishes, and seafood stews.
Like other filter-feeding bivalves, Mytilus edulis can also bioaccumulate toxic compounds under certain conditions, including domoic acid from harmful algal blooms and heavy metals such as cadmium, making environmental monitoring essential for safe consumption.
