The genus name Vicia is Latin for vetch, referring to a group of related leguminous plants, while the species epithet faba is Latin for “bean,” emphasizing its long-standing role as a staple pulse. Unlike many other legumes, the precise wild ancestor of Vicia faba remains uncertain, suggesting a very ancient and possibly extinct progenitor.

As a food source, Vicia faba provides edible seeds that are consumed fresh, dried, or processed. The beans are a major component of traditional dishes such as Mediterranean stews and Middle Eastern foods like ful medames. Nutritionally, Vicia faba seeds are rich in protein, dietary fiber, complex carbohydrates, and micronutrients such as folate, iron, and magnesium. The beans also contain a range of bioactive compounds, including vicine and convicine, which can induce oxidative stress in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, leading to a condition known as favism. Other compounds include L-DOPA (levodopa), a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine, as well as flavonoids and phenolic acids with antioxidant properties.
