Myrica rubra, commonly known as yangmei, Chinese bayberry, waxberry, or yumberry, is a subtropical evergreen tree in the family Myricaceae. It is native to eastern Asia, primarily south-central China, where it has been cultivated for at least 2,000 years, and it is also found in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. The genus name Myrica is derived from the Greek myrike, meaning "fragrant shrub," while the species epithet *rubra* is Latin for "red," denoting the fruit's characteristic deep crimson hue. Historically, yangmei has been highly celebrated in Chinese literature and folk medicine, prized as a seasonal delicacy and valued in ancient agrarian economies across the Yangtze River basin.
The plant is a small-to-medium evergreen tree with a smooth, grey bark and a dense, spherical crown of dark green, leathery leaves. It features a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing Frankia bacteria in its root nodules, allowing it to thrive in poor, acidic soils typical of upland and mountainous terrains. The fruit is a spherical drupe with a highly distinct, bumpy exterior composed of numerous soft, fleshy, finger-like projections (succulent papillae) radiating from a single central seed. As the fruit matures, its color transitions from a bright green to a brilliant pinkish-red, and finally to a deep, nearly black purple. Myrica rubra is highly valued in agroforestry for soil conservation on steep slopes, though its fresh fruit has a very brief harvest window in early summer.
Yangmei is revered for its complex and refreshing flavor profile, which expertly balances a sharp, puckering tartness with a rich, herbal sweetness. The unique texture of the external papillae gives it a pleasant, juicy mouthfeel when eaten fresh. Because the fruit lacks a protective skin or rind, it is incredibly delicate and highly perishable, traditionally making it difficult to transport outside its growing regions. In Chinese gastronomy, it is frequently consumed fresh, stepped into regional rice wines (yangmei jiu), or preserved by drying and candying. In modern applications, it is increasingly processed into premium juices, purees, and frozen concentrates for the international beverage industry.
Nutritionally, the Chinese bayberry is low in calories but exceptionally dense in dietary fiber, Vitamin C, and potassium. Its biochemical matrix is world-renowned for an exceptionally high concentration of unique polyphenolic antioxidants. The fruit's striking dark red color is driven by cyanidin-3-glucoside, which accounts for the vast majority of its anthocyanin content. Additionally, the plant synthesizes myricetin, a powerful flavonol first isolated from this family, and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. In traditional Chinese medicine, the fruit is utilized to aid digestion, alleviate heat stroke, and quench thirst, while the tannin-rich bark is used as an astringent. Modern pharmacological research heavily focuses on these bioactive compounds, investigating their potent radical-scavenging capabilities, anti-inflammatory effects, and ability to support metabolic and cardiovascular health.
