Celtis sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese hackberry, is a deciduous tree in the family Cannabaceae. It is native to eastern Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. The genus name Celtis is the ancient Latin term for the lotus tree, while the species epithet sinensis indicates its origin in China. Historically, this tree has been deeply integrated into East Asian landscapes, valued not only for its durable, versatile timber but also for its resilience as an ornamental in temple gardens and as a traditional food source during periods of scarcity.
The tree typically grows to a moderate height of 15 to 20 meters, featuring a widespread, rounded crown and distinct, greyish-brown bark that often develops corky, warty ridges with age. Its leaves are alternate, ovate-lanceolate, and serrated, displaying a glossy green surface that turns a vibrant yellow in the autumn. The tree produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in the spring, followed by small, drupe-like fruits. These fruits, which ripen from green to a dark, orange-red or brownish-purple in the late summer and autumn, have a thin, sweet-tasting flesh wrapped around a relatively large, hard stone (endocarp). The Chinese hackberry is highly valued for its ability to thrive in a variety of soil conditions, ranging from dry, rocky slopes to moist, fertile riverbanks, and is notably salt-tolerant, making it a common sight in coastal regions.
The fruit of Celtis sinensis is traditionally considered a "famine food" or a seasonal snack for foragers rather than a primary agricultural staple. The flesh of the fruit is thin but pleasantly sweet and chewy, with a flavor reminiscent of dates or butterscotch. In many rural communities, the berries are gathered and eaten fresh, or they are sometimes crushed and mixed with grain flour to create sweet, dense cakes or porridge. While the stone is typically discarded, its nutty kernel is sometimes extracted and consumed in some regions, offering a mild, oil-rich flavor. Because the fruits are small and laborious to collect, they are primarily valued by those with a deep connection to regional foraging traditions as hackberry seeds have been found alongside the fossilized remains of Peking Man (an early Homo erectus species) in the Zhoukoudian cave system in China.
