Dioscorea polystachya is a perennial climbing plant species in the family Dioscoreaceae, cultivated for its edible underground tubers commonly known as Chinese yam or nagaimo. The genus name Dioscorea was given by the Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus in honor of the ancient Greek physician and botanist Dioscorides, whose writings documented many medicinal plants. The species epithet polystachya derives from Greek poly (“many”) and stachys (“spike” or “ear”), referring to the plant’s multiple spike-like inflorescences. The species is native to East Asia, particularly China, and has long been cultivated throughout China, Japan, and Korea as both a food crop and a medicinal plant.
The plant produces long twining vines with heart-shaped leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers arranged along slender spikes. Underground it develops elongated cylindrical tubers that may grow deep into the soil. These tubers have a pale interior and a distinctive mucilaginous texture when grated or cut. The mild flavor and sticky texture make it a versatile ingredient in both everyday dishes and traditional health-oriented preparations.
Nutritionally, the tubers contain complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and moderate amounts of vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin B6, along with minerals including potassium and manganese. The characteristic viscosity of the grated tuber results from mucilaginous polysaccharides and glycoproteins. Bioactive compounds identified in Dioscorea polystachya include steroidal saponins such as diosgenin precursors, allantoin, and various phenolic compounds, which have been studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulatory properties in experimental research.
