The hackberry is a tough, adaptable tree that can reach heights of 25 meters, recognized by its distinctively rugged, corky bark that forms warty, irregular ridges as it matures. The leaves are simple, alternate, and ovate-lanceolate with a characteristic asymmetrical base and serrated margins. In late summer and autumn, the tree produces small, pea-sized drupes—fleshy fruits containing a single, hard, stony seed.
