Balaenoptera acutorostrata is a species of baleen whale in the family Balaenopteridae, commonly known as the common minke whale. It is widely distributed throughout the world’s oceans, inhabiting temperate to cold waters in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The genus name Balaenoptera derives from Latin balaena (“whale”) and Greek pteron (“fin” or “wing”), referring to the finned body form characteristic of rorqual whales, while the species epithet acutorostrata comes from Latin acutus (“sharp”) and rostrum (“snout”), describing the species’ pointed head shape.
This species is among the smaller members of the rorqual whales, typically reaching lengths of 7–10 meters. It has a streamlined body, a pointed snout, and pleated throat grooves that allow expansion during feeding. Like other baleen whales, Balaenoptera acutorostrata feeds by filter feeding, engulfing large volumes of water and trapping small prey such as krill, plankton, and small schooling fish in its baleen plates. It is a fast and relatively elusive swimmer compared to larger whale species.
As a food source, minke whale has been used in certain regional food traditions, particularly in Japan, Norway, and Iceland, where regulated whaling has supplied whale meat for consumption. The meat is typically dark red, high in protein, and relatively low in fat compared to some other marine mammals. It has been prepared in various ways, including raw (as sashimi), grilled, or stewed. However, its use as food is highly controversial due to conservation concerns, international regulations, and ethical debates surrounding whaling practices.
Nutritionally, whale meat contains high-quality protein, iron, and B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12. It also contains marine lipids, including omega-3 fatty acids. Bioactive compounds present include creatine, taurine, and other nitrogen-containing metabolites typical of mammalian muscle tissue. As with other large marine animals, there is potential for accumulation of environmental contaminants such as mercury and persistent organic pollutants, which has raised health considerations in some contexts.
