Meretrix lusoria is a marine bivalve mollusk in the family Veneridae, commonly known as the Japanese hard clam or common orient clam. It is distributed along the western Pacific coasts, particularly in Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan, where it inhabits sandy and muddy tidal flats and shallow coastal waters. The genus name Meretrix derives from Latin meaning “courtesan” or “beautiful woman,” a reference to its aesthetically patterned shells, while the species epithet lusoria comes from Latin lusorius, meaning “playful” or “sportive,” possibly alluding to shell markings or variability. In Japan it is commonly known as hamaguri (ハマグリ).
As a benthic filter feeder, Meretrix lusoria plays an ecological role in coastal nutrient cycling by filtering phytoplankton and suspended organic particles from seawater. The clam has a thick, smooth, triangular shell with subtle concentric growth lines and a glossy interior. Historically and in modern cuisine, it is highly valued in East Asian food traditions. In Japanese cuisine it is used in clear soups such as ushiojiru, grilled preparations, steamed dishes, and festive foods associated with seasonal celebrations. In Chinese and Korean cuisines it appears in stir-fries, soups, and noodle dishes.
Meretrix lusoria provides edible adductor muscle and mantle tissue rich in high-quality protein, glycogen, taurine, and marine minerals such as iron and zinc. It also contains compounds including taurine and small bioactive peptides that have been studied for cardiovascular and metabolic effects. Like other bivalves, it can accumulate environmental contaminants or marine biotoxins depending on water quality, so safe harvesting and monitoring are essential.
