Sus scrofa is a species of even-toed ungulate in the family Suidae, widely distributed across Eurasia and parts of North Africa, and introduced to many other regions worldwide. It is commonly known as the wild boar and is the wild ancestor of the domesticated pig (Sus scrofa domesticus or Sus domesticus). The genus name Sus is Latin for “pig,” while the species epithet scrofa is also Latin, historically referring to a breeding sow. This species has played a central role in human subsistence and agriculture, both as a hunted animal and as the progenitor of one of the most important domesticated livestock species.
Sus scrofa inhabits a wide range of environments including forests, grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural areas, demonstrating high ecological adaptability which has led to the emergence of several distinct subspecies. It is an omnivorous animal with a varied diet consisting of roots, tubers, fruits, seeds, small animals, and carrion. Its strong snout is adapted for rooting in soil to uncover underground food sources. Wild boars exhibit significant variation in size and coat depending on geographic region, but generally possess a robust body, coarse hair, and prominent tusks, particularly in males.
As a food source, Sus scrofa provides wild boar meat, which has been consumed across Eurasia for millennia. Compared to domesticated pork, wild boar meat is typically leaner, darker, and more intensely flavored due to its active lifestyle and natural diet. It is used in a variety of culinary traditions, including roasting, stewing, curing, and sausage-making. In Europe, wild boar is a classic game meat, while in East Asia it has also been incorporated into regional dishes. Like other game meats, it requires proper handling and thorough cooking to avoid parasites such as Trichinella.
Nutritionally, wild boar meat is high in protein and contains lower fat content than domesticated pork, with a favorable proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. It provides essential micronutrients including iron, zinc, and B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12.
