Pisum sativum is an annual leguminous plant in the family Fabaceae, widely cultivated for its edible seeds and pods, commonly known as the garden pea. The genus name Pisum is the classical Latin term for pea, while the species epithet sativum means “cultivated,” indicating its long history as a domesticated crop. The plant is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region and the Near East, where it was among the early domesticated crops of Neolithic agriculture before spreading throughout Europe, Asia, and eventually the rest of the world.
The plant is a climbing or trailing herb with slender stems, compound leaves ending in tendrils, and small white or purple flowers that develop into elongated pods. Within these pods are round seeds that vary in size, color, and sweetness depending on the cultivar. Major cultivated forms include garden peas, snow peas (harvested for their flat edible pods), and snap peas, which combine edible pods with plump seeds. Pisum sativum plays an important role in agriculture not only as a food crop but also as a nitrogen-fixing plant, forming symbiotic relationships with soil bacteria that enrich soil fertility.
As a food source, Pisum sativum is consumed fresh, dried, or processed. Fresh green peas are used in a wide variety of dishes including soups, stews, salads, and side dishes, while dried peas are used in split pea soups, porridges, and traditional dishes across Europe and Asia. Snow peas and snap peas are commonly stir-fried or eaten raw in salads. Peas are also processed into frozen vegetables, canned products, and pea flour, which is used in noodles, snacks, and gluten-free formulations.
Nutritionally, peas are rich in plant protein, dietary fiber, and carbohydrates, as well as vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin K, and several B vitamins. They also contain minerals including iron, magnesium, and potassium. Bioactive compounds present in Pisum sativum include phenolic compounds, flavonoids, saponins, and lectins, which have been studied for antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering, and glycemic-regulating effects. Like other legumes, peas contain antinutritional factors such as phytic acid, though these can be reduced through soaking, cooking, or fermentation.
