Tridacna gigas is the largest living species of bivalve mollusk and a member of the family Cardiidae, commonly known as the giant clam. It inhabits shallow coral reef environments of the Indo-Pacific region, including Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and parts of Micronesia. The genus name Tridacna derives from Greek tri- (“three”) and daknein (“to bite”), referring to the appearance of the shell’s interlocking hinge teeth, while the species epithet gigas is Greek for “giant,” reflecting its exceptional size, as individuals may exceed one meter in length and weigh over 200 kilograms.
Tridacna gigas lives partially embedded in coral reef substrates and maintains a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) housed within its mantle tissues. These symbionts contribute nutrients via photosynthesis, supplementing the clam’s filter-feeding on plankton. Historically, giant clams have been harvested throughout the Indo-Pacific for their adductor muscle and mantle tissue, which are consumed fresh, cooked, or dried. In some cultures, the flesh is eaten raw as sashimi-style preparations, while in others it is stewed or incorporated into soups and curries. The large shells have also been used as vessels, building material, and ritual objects.
Tridacna gigas provides a dense, protein-rich muscle and mantle tissue containing essential amino acids, marine lipids, and trace minerals. Because it is a filter feeder, it can bioaccumulate marine toxins and environmental contaminants, depending on local water conditions. Overharvesting and habitat degradation have significantly reduced wild populations, and the species is listed as vulnerable, leading to aquaculture and conservation initiatives in several Indo-Pacific nations.
