Cassia fistula, commonly known as the golden shower tree, purging cassia, or Indian laburnum, is a medium-sized deciduous tree in the Fabaceae family. Native to the Indian subcontinent and adjacent regions of Southeast Asia, it is famously celebrated as the national tree of Thailand and the state flower of Kerala in India. The genus name Cassia is an ancient Greek term for aromatic plants, while the species epithet fistula is Latin for "tube" or "pipe," a direct reference to its distinct, long, cylindrical woody seed pods. Historically, this tree has been a pillar of Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for centuries, revered primarily for its potent medicinal properties rather than as a staple caloric food source.
The tree typically reaches heights of 10 to 20 meters and is most iconic for its breathtaking late-spring bloom, when it sheds its leaves and replaces them with long, pendulous, vibrant yellow racemes that appear to shower the tree in gold. It produces woody, non-dehiscent, cylindrical pods that can reach up to 60 centimeters in length. Inside these pods, the seeds are embedded in a dark, sweet, and sticky pulp, separated by thin transverse septa. Cassia fistula is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in tropical and subtropical climates, commonly used in landscaping for its ornamental beauty and in reforestation projects.
The pulp of Cassia fistula is rarely consumed as a primary caloric food. Instead, it is highly sought after as a gentle, natural laxative. In traditional systems of medicine, the dark, viscous pulp extracted from the pods is prepared into decoctions or added to teas to treat chronic constipation, biliousness, and general digestive inflammation. The leaves are occasionally used in traditional topical applications, and in some regional traditions, the flowers are cooked as a potherb, although this is far less common than its therapeutic use. Because the pulp can be potent, its use is carefully regulated in traditional preparations to avoid over-stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Nutritionally, the pulp is rich in various sugars, mucilage, and organic acids, but its pharmacological profile is defined by anthraquinone glycosides. These compounds are the primary bioactive agents responsible for its laxative effect, acting as stimulants for intestinal peristalsis. The pulp also contains significant concentrations of flavonoids, phenolic acids, and tannins that provide antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Modern pharmacological research focuses on the potential of these compounds for anti-diabetic activity, pain management, and their capacity to modulate oxidative stress in the gut.
