Reinhardtius hippoglossoides is a deep-sea flatfish in the family Pleuronectidae, commonly known as the Greenland halibut or Greenland turbot. It is distributed in cold, deep waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans, including Arctic and subarctic regions. The genus name Reinhardtius honors the Danish zoologist Johannes Reinhardt, while the species epithet hippoglossoides derives from Greek hippos (“horse”) and glossa (“tongue”), with the suffix “-oides” meaning “resembling,” indicating its similarity to true halibuts of the genus Hippoglossus. This species is adapted to deep, cold marine environments and occupies benthic and benthopelagic ecological niches.
The fish has an elongated, laterally flattened body typical of right-eyed flounders, with both eyes located on the right side of the head. Unlike some shallower flatfish, it is capable of active swimming in the water column and is found at considerable depths, often several hundred to over a thousand meters. Its diet consists of smaller fish, crustaceans, and other marine organisms, making it an important mid- to upper-level predator in deep-sea ecosystems.
Reinhardtius hippoglossoides is highly valued for its rich, fatty flesh, which has a soft texture and distinctive flavor compared with leaner white fish. It is harvested commercially in northern fisheries and is sold fresh, frozen, or smoked. The high lipid content, particularly in the muscle tissue, makes it suitable for smoking and grilling, as well as for use in prepared seafood dishes. In European and North American cuisines, it is often marketed as Greenland halibut and used in fillets, steaks, and processed seafood products. In Japanese cuisine, it is a popular source for engawa (flounder fin) in conveyor belt sushi restaurants.
