The genus name Scomberomorus combines Scomber, the Latin term for mackerel, with a suffix indicating resemblance, while the species epithet niphonius refers to “Nippon,” an older name for Japan, reflecting the region where the species was first described. In Japan it is known as sawara (サワラ), a fish strongly associated with seasonal cuisine.
