Apostichopus japonicus is a species of sea cucumber in the family Stichopodidae, widely distributed in the coastal waters of the northwest Pacific Ocean, particularly around Japan, Korea, northern China, and the Russian Far East. It is one of the most commercially and culturally important edible sea cucumbers in East Asia. The genus name Apostichopus derives from Greek roots meaning “separate row” or “distinct line,” referring to morphological features of the body wall and tube feet, while the species epithet japonicus means “of Japan,” reflecting its early scientific description from Japanese waters. Apostichopus japonicus inhabits shallow coastal environments, including rocky substrates and sandy or muddy seabeds, where it functions as a detritivore, ingesting sediment and organic matter and contributing to nutrient cycling in marine ecosystems. The animal has an elongated, leathery body with rows of tube feet and may vary in color from red to green or black depending on morphotype and habitat.
In Japan, Apostichopus japonicus is commonly known as namako (ナマコ), and it has long been valued as both a delicacy and a medicinal food. Historically, it has been harvested and traded across East Asia, including in dried form for long-distance commerce, and it remains a high-value aquaculture species in China and Japan. Apostichopus japonicus is consumed fresh, boiled, dried, or rehydrated. In Japanese cuisine it is prepared as sliced raw namako, vinegared dishes such as sunomono, or processed into dried products used in soups and braises. In Chinese cuisine it is often braised after extensive rehydration.
The body wall is rich in collagen and glycosaminoglycans like chondroitin sulfate. Bioactive compounds include specific triterpene glycosides such as holotoxins like holothurins, as well as sulfated polysaccharides and chondroitin sulfate derivatives, which have been studied for anticoagulant, immunomodulatory, and anticancer properties in experimental models. Some triterpene glycosides exhibit cytotoxic activity in vitro, so the organism must be processed by cutting it open, removing all internal organs, and vigorously washing the body wall to make it safe for consumption.
