Rubus × loganobaccus, commonly known as the loganberry, is a robust, trailing hybrid shrub in the family Rosaceae. It originated in Santa Cruz, California, in 1881 as an accidental cross created by the American horticulturist and judge James Harvey Logan. The genus name Rubus is Latin for "bramble," while the hybrid epithet loganobaccus directly honors its creator, combining "Logan" with baccus (a variant of bacca, the Latin word for "berry"). Historically, the loganberry represents a landmark event in horticultural ethnobiology: it was a spontaneous cross between one of Logan's dewberry-blackberry hybrids (Rubus ursinus 'Aughinbaugh' x Rubus velox 'Early Texas') and a red raspberry (Rubus idaeus), combining the traits of three distinct subgenera.
The plant is characterized by its vigorous, trailing canes that are heavily armed with small, dark red prickles, mimicking the growth habit of its blackberry parent. The leaves are large, mid-green, and typically composed of three to five serrated leaflets. It produces clusters of white, five-petaled flowers in late spring. The fruit is elongated and conical; unlike a raspberry, when a loganberry is harvested, the central core (receptacle) remains inside the fruit, which is a definitive characteristic inherited from the blackberry. It is highly resilient and adapts well to cool, coastal climates with well-draining, organic-rich soils.
The loganberry is celebrated for its deep, rich flavor that balances the sharp, bright tartness of a raspberry with the earthy depth of a blackberry. When fully ripe, the berries turn a deep, dusky red-purple and become significantly sweeter. In modern gastronomy, they are highly versatile but are most frequently utilized in cooked applications such as pies, tarts, crumbles, and preserves, where their high acidity and natural pectin levels help create excellent textures and bright flavor profiles. In the United Kingdom and Western Europe, they are traditionally used to make artisanal syrups, fruit wines, and regional summer puddings.
Nutritionally, the loganberry is an exceptional source of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), manganese, and dietary fiber. Its deep pigmentation signals a high concentration of polyphenolic compounds, specifically anthocyanins (such as cyanidin derivatives) and ellagitannins. Because of its genetic lineage, its chemical profile is a hybrid matrix containing both the raspberry's signature volatile components and the blackberry's dense phenolic structure.
