The plant is characterized by its low-growing, trailing habits, creeping along the ground or scrambling over other vegetation with slender, heavily armed canes covered in sharp, curved prickles. Its leaves are typically trifoliate (sometimes with five leaflets on vigorous canes) with sharply serrated margins and a deep green hue.
