Thunnus orientalis, commonly known as Pacific bluefin tuna, is a large, fast-swimming pelagic fish in the family Scombridae. It is native to the North Pacific Ocean, spawning primarily in the western Pacific near Japan and Taiwan and migrating across the Pacific to the coasts of North America, including Mexico and California, before returning westward. The genus name Thunnus derives from the Greek thýnnos, meaning “tuna,” while the species epithet orientalis is Latin for “eastern”. The common name “Pacific bluefin tuna” distinguishes it from the Atlantic bluefin (Thunnus thynnus) and the southern bluefin (Thunnus maccoyii).
As a highly migratory apex predator, Thunnus orientalis occupies a significant ecological position in marine food webs. Historically, it has been harvested in Japan and other East Asian regions for centuries, and in modern times it has become one of the most economically valuable fish species in global seafood markets, especially in the high-end sushi and sashimi trade. As a food source, Thunnus orientalis is prized for its high fat content, firm texture, and deep red flesh. In Japanese cuisine, it is central to sushi and sashimi traditions, where different cuts are differentiated by fat content, including akami (lean red meat), chūtoro (medium fatty tuna), and ōtoro (highly marbled fatty belly). It is also grilled, seared, or canned in various culinary traditions around the Pacific Rim. In recent decades, global demand—especially for raw consumption—has driven the development of extensive wild fisheries and aquaculture (ranching) operations. In Japanese culinary contexts, Pacific bluefin tuna is strongly associated with high-end sushi culture, while in other Pacific regions it may be grilled or incorporated into contemporary seafood dishes.
Thunnus orientalis contains high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D (cholecalciferol), vitamin B12 (cobalamin), selenium and taurine. As a large predatory fish, it can also bioaccumulate methylmercury, a neurotoxic organomercury compound formed from inorganic mercury in marine environments, making consumption advisories relevant, particularly for pregnant individuals and young children.
