The fungus is an ectomycorrhizal species that forms vital symbiotic bonds with the roots of Western Hemlock and Douglas Fir trees. It is characterized by its funnel-shaped cap, which ranges from bright yellow to a duller ochre, and the presence of "false gills"—blunt, wavy ridges that are decurrent, meaning they run down the length of the relatively thick, fleshy stem.
