The genus name Boehmeria honors the German botanist Georg Rudolf Boehmer, while the species epithet nivea derives from Latin meaning “snowy” or “white,” referring to the pale, silky underside of the leaves. The plant is native to East Asia, particularly China, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years, and it later spread to Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia as both a fiber and minor food crop.
