Brassica napus is a cultivated plant species in the family Brassicaceae, widely grown for its oil-rich seeds and leafy greens. It is commonly known as rapeseed, oilseed rape, or canola depending on the cultivar and intended use. The genus name Brassica derives from the Latin word for cabbage or related cruciferous plants, while the species epithet napus comes from Latin meaning “turnip,” reflecting its relationship to other root and leafy crops within the genus. The plant is believed to have originated through hybridization between Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea, producing a species that combines traits from both parental lineages.
Brassica napus is an annual or biennial herb that grows upright with bluish-green leaves and clusters of bright yellow flowers typical of the mustard family. It is widely cultivated in temperate agricultural regions across Europe, North America, and Asia. The plant produces small round seeds that are rich in oil, making it one of the most important global oilseed crops. Modern cultivars bred for low levels of erucic acid and glucosinolates are marketed as canola, a name derived from “Canadian oil, low acid,” reflecting breeding efforts developed in Canada during the twentieth century.
As a food source, Brassica napus contributes primarily through its seeds, which are processed to produce vegetable oil. Canola oil derived from these seeds is widely used for cooking, frying, baking, and food processing because of its mild flavor and favorable fatty acid profile. The oil contains a high proportion of monounsaturated fats, moderate amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids including omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid, and relatively low levels of saturated fat compared with many other edible oils. The young leaves of some varieties are also consumed as leafy vegetables in certain Asian regional cuisines, while the roots are consumed in Northern Europe and North America where they are known as Swedish turnips (swedes) or rutabaga.
Chemically, the seeds contain triglycerides composed of fatty acids such as oleic acid, linoleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid. Other constituents include glucosinolates, phenolic compounds, tocopherols (vitamin E compounds), and phytosterols. Plant breeding has significantly reduced erucic acid and glucosinolate levels in edible cultivars to improve safety and flavor. After oil extraction, the remaining seed meal is rich in protein and is commonly used as animal feed.
