Acipenser ruthenus, universally known as the sterlet sturgeon, is a relatively small species of sturgeon in the family Acipenseridae. It is native to the large, fast-flowing rivers of Eurasia, particularly those flowing into the Caspian, Black, Baltic, White, Barents, and Kara seas, with dense historical populations in the Danube, Volga, and Ob river systems.
