Claytonia virginica, universally known as Virginia spring beauty, fairy spud, or narrowleaf springbeauty, is a herbaceous perennial wildflower in the miner's lettuce family (Montiaceae). It is native to eastern North America, spanning from midwestern forests across to the Atlantic coast and stretching from Canada down to Texas. The genus name Claytonia honors John Clayton, an early British-born botanist who collected extensive plant specimens in colonial Virginia, while the species epithet virginica denotes its geographical origin in the Virginia territory. Historically, this delicate plant has played an important role in North American ethnobiology; it was highly utilized by Indigenous peoples, including the Iroquois and Algonquin tribes, as a concentrated, carbohydrate-rich seasonal food source during the early spring months when other provisions were depleted.
The plant is a classic spring ephemeral, completing its entire above-ground life cycle rapidly in the forest understory before the overstory canopy leafs out and blocks the sunlight. It grows up to 40 centimeters tall, producing slender, fleshy, grass-like leaves and loose, nodding clusters of star-shaped flowers. The underground corms of Claytonia virginica are a celebrated wild delicacy, prized by modern foragers for their crisp texture and remarkably rich, nutty flavor that closely mimics chestnuts or sweet potatoes when cooked. Historically, Indigenous populations gathered large quantities of these "spuds," which were boiled, roasted, or baked in communal earth ovens. The tender young leaves, stems, and flowers are also completely edible, offering a mild, succulent, spinach-like flavor that can be enjoyed raw in wild spring salads or lightly steamed as a potherb.
