Morus alba, commonly known as the white mulberry, is a fast-growing, deciduous medium-sized tree belonging to the family Moraceae. Native to northern China, it has been widely naturalized across the globe, spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The genus name Morus is the classical Latin name for mulberry, while the species epithet alba translates to "white," describing the typical pale color of its flower buds and occasionally its ripe fruit. Historically, Morus alba is of monumental ethnobiological importance as the primary food source for silkworms (Bombyx mori) in the ancient practice of sericulture (silk production), which triggered the development of the historic Silk Road trading routes connecting China to the Mediterranean.
The plant is characterized by its highly variable, polymorphic leaves, which can range from unlobed to deeply divided into multiple lobes on the same branch, all featuring sharply serrated margins. In the spring, it produces inconspicuous, drooping catkins that are wind-pollinated. The resulting fruit is a cylindrical aggregate of tiny drupes, resembling a blackberry. Despite its common name, the fruits of Morus alba are not always white; they can mature into shades of pink, red, or dark purple-black, making physical identification based on color alone unreliable. The tree is exceptionally resilient and adaptive, capable of thriving in urban environments, disturbed soils, and varied climates, which has also led to its classification as an invasive species in some regions outside its native range.
The ripe berries of Morus alba are highly valued for their intense, honey-like sweetness and low acidity. Unlike red or black mulberries, white mulberries lack a sharp, tart edge, offering a more delicate, sugary flavor profile. In traditional Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines, the fruits are eaten fresh, dried like raisins to be consumed as a sweet snack, or boiled down into rich syrups and molasses (dut pekmezi). The tender young leaves also have a long culinary and therapeutic history; they are commonly dried and infused into a popular herbal tea across East Asia or blanched and consumed as a potherb.
Nutritionally, white mulberries are low in calories but rich in Vitamin C, iron, potassium, and dietary fiber. The plant's biochemical matrix is remarkably complex and widely studied for its potent metabolic benefits. The leaves contain a high concentration of 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), a specialized polyhydroxy alkaloid that acts as a potent alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. DNJ slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in the small intestine, thereby helping to regulate post-meal blood glucose spikes. Additionally, the fruit and root bark are rich in powerful polyphenols, including resveratrol, oxyresveratrol, and rutin, which provide robust antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, various parts of the tree (known as Sang) are prescribed to treat coughs, support liver health, and manage diabetes.
